Throughout the years, our members have tackled various worker justice issues around pay, workplace treatment, and health care for low-wage workers, city employees and independent contractors through organized campaigns. These campaigns led have won changes in the laws governing the Alexandria taxi business, a living wage requirement for all employees and contractors working for the city of Alexandria, and increased the budget for and expanded the rights of city child care providers under the law.
In 2000, we expanded to include a Culmore Chapter of TWU. Currently, this chapter is focused on broadening support and collaboration in the Culmore area of Fairfax County for immigrant and low-wage workers by building relationships with local law enforcement, businesses and churches; providing English language instruction for immigrant workers; and participating in community service. Chapter members regularly host "Community Clean-Up Days," in areas frequented by day-laborers and contractors. They organized a Neighborhood Watch program for the community and hold community events such as this years Thanksgiving Dinner that brought together hundreds of Culmore resident to celebrate the holiday. At request and in response to the growing need, TWU staff and membership has implemented a process through which workers can recover unpaid wages from dishonest local employers. In just five months, over $9,000 in unpaid wages was recovered from local contractors.
